5 October 2026 · 7 min read

On Saturday 10 October 2026 the moon disappears into the sun’s glare in the middle of Libra, and for about two days the sky is as dark as it gets. That is the traditional moment to set something down and begin again. This guide gives you the timing, what the Libra new moon is about this year, and a short ritual — about twenty minutes — that needs a candle, a sheet of paper and a pen.

When it happens

The new moon is exact at 15:50 UTC on 10 October 2026, at about 17° Libra, in the same degree as the sun. In your own time zone:

wherelocal time
US Pacific (PDT)10 Oct, 8:50 am
US Eastern (EDT)10 Oct, 11:50 am
London (BST)10 Oct, 4:50 pm
Paris / Berlin (CEST)10 Oct, 5:50 pm
India (IST)10 Oct, 9:20 pm
Sydney (AEDT)11 Oct, 2:50 am

You do not need to do anything at that exact minute. The working window in most traditions is the evening of the new moon and the next two or three days, while the moon is dark or a thin sliver. If the 10th is busy, the evening of the 11th is fine. The full moon that closes the cycle is on 26 October in Taurus.

What a Libra new moon is about

Libra is the sign of the scales: relationships, fairness, agreements, taste and the work of weighing two sides honestly. It is a cardinal air sign — it starts things, and it starts them through other people. A new moon here is traditionally a good time to begin, or restore, anything that depends on balance between you and someone else: a partnership, a negotiation, a household, a friendship, an agreement with yourself about how much you give.

There is a wrinkle this year. Libra is ruled by Venus, and Venus stationed retrograde on 3–4 October in Scorpio and runs backwards until mid-November. Astrologers read a Venus retrograde as a period for reviewing what and whom you value rather than for new commitments. So the honest intention for this moon is probably not “bring me a new love” but something closer to “let me see my relationships clearly and be fair in them.” The month by rising sign is in our October horoscope, including which house of your life Libra falls in.

If you don’t believe any of this, you can still use the structure. A new moon is a built-in monthly reminder to stop and decide something. Libra just supplies the theme.

What you need

  • One candle — white, pale pink or pale blue are the traditional Libra choices, but any will do.
  • A sheet of paper and a pen.
  • A lighter and something to catch ash (a plate, a bowl).
  • A glass of water or tea.
  • Optional: a tarot deck. Justice is the card traditionally linked with Libra. A rose quartz or a flower such as a rose is a traditional Libra correspondence, a prop rather than a power.

Choose a surface that’s clear and tidy. Libra is also the sign of aesthetics, and a ritual in a clean space works better than one on top of a pile of mail.

The ritual: twenty minutes

1. Clear the table (2 minutes)

Put away what isn’t needed. Wipe the surface. Open a window. This is the step that tells your mind you are doing something different from scrolling.

2. Light the candle and say why you’re here (1 minute)

Strike the match or lighter and say out loud, in your own words: “It is the new moon in Libra. I am here to begin again in balance.” Keep it that plain. Nothing needs to rhyme.

3. Draw the scales (4 minutes)

Divide your paper in half with a vertical line. Head the left column what I give and the right column what I receive. Pick one relationship or area — a partner, a friend, a colleague, your family, your work — and list what goes into each side honestly. Not what ought to, what does.

When the columns are lopsided, notice it without judging. Libra’s work is to see the weights, not to punish whoever is heavier.

4. Name the imbalance (3 minutes)

At the bottom of the page write one sentence: “The place I’m out of balance is ______.” Make it specific. “I say yes when I mean no to ______.” “I wait for ______ to ask before I say what I need.” That sentence is the real content of the ritual.

5. Draw a card (3 minutes)

If you read tarot, shuffle while thinking of your sentence and draw one card for what balance would look like here. Or take Justice out of the deck and look at it instead. If you have no deck, the free daily card below does the same job. Don’t ask for a verdict; look for an image or a word you can act on.

6. Set one intention (3 minutes)

On the other side of the page write one intention in the present tense, as something small and doable that fits your sentence: “I say the true thing kindly.” “I ask for what I need before I’m resentful.” “I give what I can afford to give.” Keep it to a behaviour you control, not an outcome somebody else has to deliver.

7. Close (2 minutes)

Read your intention aloud once. Thank the candle for its light. Blow it out, or let it burn down safely if you’re staying in the room. If you wish, tear off the “imbalance” half of the page and burn it safely over the plate, or tear it up and bin it. Keep the intention where you’ll see it: on the fridge or on your phone.

If you only have two minutes

Light a candle. Say your one sentence — “The place I’m out of balance is ______” — and your one intention. Blow it out. It is a complete ritual, and probably better than a complicated one you skip.

What to do over the next two weeks

  • Do the one small thing in your intention at least twice before the next full moon.
  • Keep a line a day in a notebook: where did the scales tip today?
  • On 26 October, when the full moon in Taurus stands opposite the sun, reread the page. Whatever has grown, or refused to, is the result of this cycle.
  • Check tonight’s sky any time. It shows the moon’s phase, sign and which planets are retrograde, computed rather than copied.

A note on what a ritual does

A ritual doesn’t make a relationship change, and the moon is a long way from your living room. What a ritual does is make you stop long enough to say a true sentence out loud and choose one small action. For a thing like balance, that is most of the work. If you also like the poetry of doing it with the sky, Libra’s page covers the sign in more depth.

questions she's asked

When is the new moon in Libra in October 2026?

Saturday 10 October 2026 at 15:50 UTC, at about 17° Libra. That is 11:50 am US Eastern, 8:50 am US Pacific, 4:50 pm in London and 5:50 pm in Paris and Berlin (all on daylight time). In Sydney it is already early on the morning of 11 October.

What does a new moon in Libra mean?

A fresh start in the areas Libra governs in the tradition: relationships, fairness, agreements, beauty and the effort to weigh two sides honestly. It is a good moment to set an intention about how you want to give and receive in partnership.

How long after the new moon can I do the ritual?

Most traditions treat the day of the new moon and the two or three days after it as the working window, since the moon is dark and then a thin crescent. There is no hard cut-off, and no astronomical reason the moment must be exact. Doing it the evening of the 10th or 11th is perfectly traditional.

Does Venus retrograde affect a Libra new moon ritual?

Libra is ruled by Venus, and Venus stationed retrograde on 3–4 October 2026 in Scorpio. Astrologers read that as a season for revising what you value in relationships rather than starting brand-new ones. That suggests setting an intention about honesty and balance in what already exists, rather than demanding a clean slate.

Do I need special tools?

No. A candle, a piece of paper and a pen are enough. Anything else, a card from a tarot deck, a stone, a cup of tea, is a prop that helps you slow down.
